Handling Overly Aggressive Dogs – Some Dog Training Tips
If you have a dog that is overly aggressive you should begin training him as soon as possible, even if he usually acts somewhat shy. You don’t want him to do any harm to another dog or a child. You want to make sure your family will be safe around him. If you don’t train him properly, you run the risk of having to put him down at some point. Here are a few dog training tips for aggressive dogs.
1. Training Sessions
Set up training sessions for your dog that are designed to build his confidence and sense of security. Most dogs have a fear of something. It might be meeting other people while out walking, loud children running around, or meeting up with other dogs. Because of this, you should create a controlled environment where you can ease these tensions. For example, you could arrange to have one of your friends come up to you while you are out walking your dog. Have your friend hand him a treat. This will give your dog a positive experience and help him become more comfortable.
2. Socialization
If your dog acts aggressive around other dogs, it might be because he feels uncomfortable and is unsure how to act. You should be able to change his behavior by showing him what type of behavior is acceptable and by letting him gradually get used to other dogs. Take him to a park or dog park where there will be other dogs milling about and let your dog just observe them while he remains on his leash. If he starts to make aggressive gestures, tug on his leash and say “No” in a firm voice so he understands he is misbehaving. Help him understand he is supposed to play nice with other dogs and he should do that once he feels comfortable in their presence.
3. Avoid Aggressive Adult Dogs
When it comes to dog training tips, one of the most important is to not let your dog become too friendly with older aggressive dogs. If you do, he will pick up their bad habits and become more aggressive. It is the same with people. You don’t want to be around grouchy or mean people. Being around nice, confident and successful people helps you feel the same way. Let your dog hang out with other dogs that are calm, playful and fun to be around.
4. Muzzle
The last of the dog training tips is to purchase a muzzle to use during socializing and obedience lessons. It is important you familiarize your dog with it by placing it on just before feeding it or before playing in the yard. Then, it will not be a problem placing it on before these sessions. While training your dog, you do not want them to attack another dog or person. The muzzle is a precaution and can be removed as your dog begins to make progress.
To have the best results with these dog training tips, apply them consistently so your dog does not get mixed messages. The behavior of overly aggressive dogs can be changed through good training so your dog will feel more comfortable around other people and dogs.
These dog training tips will help your dog become a better family member and pet. Both you and your dog will be happier when he is calm around other people and animals. Overly aggressive dogs can be trained quite well when you help them understand there is nothing to fear.
