Are drills really fun? Well, no, not exactly. The nature of drills is to repeat the drills again and again… and again. While this is true, you can make them easier to handle. That is when you can really get some good out of the rest of your piano practice time, once the drills are made more enjoyable. There are some valuable and popular drills that you can do during the beginner’s keyboard lessons.

Arpeggios

Arpeggios, with the fancy sounding name, can be very effective when a beginner starts his or her keyboard lessons. There are two main benefits that the beginning piano player will receive when they practice the hand over hand drills. These exercises are meant to assist beginners in mastering the Triad. The Triad is the central point in playing the piano. There is even more to it than this! The beginner piano player will also have the ability to practice using the entire keyboard when they use this exercise. Once the beginner has mastered the Arpeggios they will move on to playing pieces that are more melodic and that they use all five fingers with.

Articulation and Elision

These fancily-named drills are perfect for piano students taking keyboard lessons for beginners. They include several types of drills that require you to master keyboard playing, including:

* A note series (two or more notes)

* Two or more notes at the same time

* Staccato

* Legato and Staccato, using two different hands

* Piano and Forte using two different hands

Scales

A set of musical notes that start at a certain note is called a scale. These are not too exciting and should be featured under “boring” in the dictionary. It is entirely possible for these drills to be used during keyboard lessons for beginners but it is really not a wise thing to do. It could make the experience very boring and not intriguing at all to the new player and they may want to quit before they really get started. The piano music for beginners does not include any scales so it is really not a necessity for beginners to learn them. They should, however be learning the concrete parachute.

Skill Drills

The short drills that teach the technical side of the music are called skill drills and they will apply focus to a particular skill set. You should take some time to research which drills will be more effective since there are many different types to choose from. For the most part you should apply several different skill drills so you can improve many different areas of your piano playing. You may also need to focus on certain drills so you can work on the areas that you are having the most trouble with. While no one likes to admit it easily, weakness in certain areas is something that we all have to face.

So why should you do piano drills anyway? One major benefit is that you can incorporate them into your warm-up routine. Just as you need to pre-heat an oven before baking, so piano drills will help to make your fingers nimbler. Another major benefit is that you can focus on skills for which you have fewer opportunities during the main portion of your practice session.
