Responsibility Of Farmer – Pruning For Better Yeilds

Who wouldn’t enjoy picking large delicious fruit from trees in his own garden? Apples, pears and peaches, equal in size and quality to those on the market, can be grown by the home gardener who gives his trees the care they need. And that isn’t a great deal more than many landscape plants demand.

First of all, plant adaptable varieties, suitable for your location and grafted on compatible root stocks. Once you have selected your varieties. follow through with proper pruning, adequate fertilizers and timely spraying and dusting.

Depending on your location, some eight to twelve spray or dust applications will be needed each year. Advice concerning these and when they should be applied can be obtained from your county agricultural agent or by writing your state college of agriculture.

The methods of pruning which commercial growers use to obtain more fruit of good size and quality are described in circulars available from most county agents in the United States. Aside from the commercial methods of pruning, the home gardener might also try training fruit trees by the espalier or cordon methods popular in Europe.

Full-sized trees of apple. pear. peach or cherry may be troublesome to some home gardeners because of limited garden space and the difficulty of spraying, pruning and harvesting. The solution is to use dwarfing root stocks which result in smaller trees.

Dwarfing can also be accomplished by heavy summer pruning or by confining the roots in pots or boxes. Neither of these methods seems as suitable as the use of dwarfing root stocks or the use of such stocks combined with heavy pruning. In addition to requiring less space and being smaller in height, dwarf trees have an added advantage of beginning to bear fruit at an earlier age than trees on ordinary seedling root stocks.
