Tiny Dog Breeds

Generally speaking, owning a small dog can be a little easier than a large one. Having said that, there are certain points they need to be made aware of when looking after a small dog. Listed below are just some of the normal daily routines that will need to be amended to suit a tiny canine.

Food considerations:

Of course eating is the most obvious daily activity but the average kibble available from the grocery may be over-sized for your dog. You have to ensure that the kibble is convenient to be used by his minute mouth and these are easily procurable among some of the premium brands of dog food. You ought to give the miniature canines some canned soft foods.

How to contain your pet:

Every dog needs the following: regular exercise, an outdoor place for his potty needs, and an enclosed area which provides the animal with security. Well so you would think but remember that larger dogs may be fine confined this way but a smaller dog may find ways to escape. Fences also can’t provide overhead protection from large hawks, which sadly have been known to carry tiny dogs and puppies away. An answer to this might be to have a fully enclosed run or area for them to run around in.

Training your dog:

While the training methodologies may be the same for large as well as tiny and are not any harder, but canine experts confirm that more often than not, the smaller counterparts are usually over-mothered. Although your pet might indeed fit into your pocket (and some breeds can), they still see the world in relation to pack mentality and someone has to be the leader so if you are weak, they will govern you. It’s a wise idea to make sure your pet is thoroughly house trained, no matter how small and inconsequential the mess might seem when he misses. Most dog professionals agree that pet dogs should be made to work as this makes it easier to train them and keep them obedient. Before you reward him with a treat or with his meal for having obeyed your commands, make his sit or run or do small tricks.

Doing something about the way your dog looks:

Caring for a small dog like the Yorkshire Terrier involves some specific functions to keep him looking good. One such specific need for a minuscule pet is that he needs more frequent nail trimming than his larger counterpart since he hardly walks or runs on uneven surfaces which would have naturally shaped up his nails. If the pet is on soft canned diet, make sure that he brushes his teeth at least twice a week. As you can see, small dog care largely follows the same route as care for any other sized dog. The differences may seem like minor details, but paying attention to them can make a big impact when it comes to meeting your pet’s special needs.
